Paracas & Huacachina Tour From Lima (2026): 7 Day Trips Compared From $55

A Paracas and Huacachina tour from Lima costs $55 to $135 for a single day and packs three very different places into it: the Ballestas Islands by boat, a pisco vineyard in Ica, and the desert oasis of Huacachina. It is the most popular day trip out of Lima, and the reason it works at all is that everything sits on one road, the Panamericana Sur, roughly 250 km south of the city.

This is where listings really differ, and the thing worth settling before you book is what "Paracas" means on the one you are reading. For most operators it means the Ballestas Islands, a two-hour boat trip out to a rock archipelago covered in sea lions, Humboldt penguins and guano birds. It does not mean the Paracas National Reserve, which is a separate protected desert inland from the pier with its own entrance fee, its own red-sand beach and its own cliff formations. Both are excellent. They are not the same trip, and only one tour here includes both. Paracas National Reserve tours are sold separately from the town of Paracas itself.

Paracas and Huacachina Day Trips at a Glance

Six of these seven run the same shape of day and differ mainly on comfort, inclusions and how much of the entrance-fee bill is already paid. The exception is the National Park tour, which is a genuinely different itinerary.

If you searched for a Paracas Reserve tour and landed on a Ballestas listing, this is the single most common mix-up on this trip, and it decides whether a booking matches what you pictured. They are two separate attractions with separate entrance fees, roughly 15 kilometres apart, and most day trips from Lima include only the first.

We'd put it this way: a Ballestas Islands tour is the wildlife half and a Paracas National Reserve tour is the landscape half. If you have seen photographs of a red beach against turquoise water and assumed it was part of the boat trip, that is the Reserve, and you need a tour that names it. On the way out to the islands the boat passes the Candelabra, a 180-metre geoglyph carved into a coastal hillside that nobody has firmly dated, which is included on every Ballestas tour by default.

One practical note on the boat: it does not stop at the islands and you cannot go ashore, which is a conservation rule rather than an operator shortcut. Sitting on the left side gives the better angle on the wildlife, and an early departure matters because afternoon wind makes the crossing choppy.

Huacachina oasis tours are the second half of every itinerary here, and it is a genuine oasis: a natural lagoon ringed by palm trees and a handful of hotels, sitting in a bowl of dunes on the edge of Ica about 75 kilometres inland from Paracas. It has a permanent population in the low hundreds, and every Lima day trip arrives in the late afternoon, usually around 3:30 PM.

In reality, what you do there is almost always the same: a two-hour dune buggy session that doubles as the transport to the sandboarding spots. The buggies are open-frame vehicles that run the ridges hard, and most people rate that ride as highly as the boarding itself. Sandboarding here is generally done lying down on your front rather than standing, which is what makes it accessible to children and to anyone who has never been on a board.

The timing is deliberate. Operators schedule the buggy for the last light so the session finishes with sunset over the dunes, which is the photograph most people associate with the trip. Huacachina admission is around S/8 and is one of the fees excluded from several headline prices, so check whether your tour has already paid it.

Every tour on this page runs the same corridor south from Lima down the Panamericana Sur, and seeing it drawn out explains the hours better than any itinerary description can. The three stops are strung along roughly 300 km of coast road, which is why the day starts before dawn and ends near midnight.

Two things become obvious on the map. The first is that Ica and Huacachina are effectively the same stop, minutes apart, which is why every itinerary bundles them. The second is that Paracas sits well north of both, so the day is not a straight run: you go coastal first, then turn inland.

The most common complaint about the Lima to Huacachina day trip is the hours, and we'd book it this way if your dates allow at all: the multi-day versions exist precisely to fix that, and the cost per day falls rather than rises. • Carry cash in soles for the gates. Ballestas entry is around S/16, the port tax S/5, the National Reserve S/11 and Huacachina admission S/8. These are collected at the gate and card is not accepted, so bring small notes even if your tour says fees are included.
• Check whether the Paracas National Reserve is actually in your itinerary. Most listings that say "Paracas" mean the Ballestas boat only. If the red beach and the cliff formations are what you want, book the tour that names the National Park explicitly.
• Sit on the left side of the Ballestas boat. The route favours that side for wildlife, and the boats are open, so the difference is real rather than marginal.
• Dress in layers for the boat. The morning crossing is cold and wet even when Lima is warm, and there is no shelter on deck. A windproof layer and something to protect a phone from spray are worth more than sunscreen at that hour.
• Eat before the 4 AM pickup or bring food. Several tours exclude meals entirely and the first proper stop is the vineyard around 1 PM. The ones that include lunch are worth the difference on a day this long.
• Confirm the minimum age if you have children. Our top pick sets 7 for the dune buggy and sandboarding, while several other tours accept children from 3. The boat is fine for younger children; the buggy is where the limit bites.
• The shorter buggy option does not shorten your day. Most tours offer a one or two hour dune session, often upgraded on the spot for around $9. Guests report that the one-hour group waits for the two-hour group rather than heading back early, so if the price is manageable the longer option is the better value.
• Ask for a moderate buggy driver, or opt out. The ride is rough by design and back strain is a recurring complaint. If you have back or neck problems, sitting this section out and watching from the dunes is a reasonable call rather than a wasted booking.
• Treat paid hotel pickup as approximate. This is the most common logistical complaint: guests who paid extra report being collected over an hour before the stated time, met at a nearby corner rather than their door, or dropped at an unfamiliar central point on the return. Confirm the exact pickup and drop-off spot the night before.
• Carry small soles beyond the entrance fees. Restrooms at the lunch stop charge around S/1, and guests mention snacks, tips and the buggy upgrade all being cash on the day.
• Pack for a bus that swings between hot and cold. Reviews split here: some report air conditioning failures leaving the coach uncomfortably hot, others say it runs cold enough to want a hoodie and a neck pillow. Layers cover both, and it is an eight-hour seat.
• Do not schedule anything for the next morning. Returns land late in the evening and the day starts before dawn. Guests who enjoyed it least were usually those with a flight or an early tour the following day.
• Take the two-day version if your schedule can absorb it. At $149 it costs about fifty dollars more than the premium day trip, removes eight hours of coach travel and gives you a night on the coast. It is the single biggest quality upgrade available on this route.
